Let me start by saying the iPhone 4 antenna issue is not caused by touching the metal antenna. I put the iPhone 4 in a zip lock bag and gripped it the same way I did in my video
and it still lost service. This is why the invisibleSHIELD fix does not work, it only covers the metal and that is not the problem. Nor is the problem any kind of shorting between the GSM and WIFI antennas, so forget what you've heard about that.
You will start losing signal when you cover about 1 inch of metal near the bottom left side of the phone. When you cover 1.5 inches, you will lose about 24 dbm of signal. Under 4.0, this can cause you to go from 5 bars (-95 dbm) to 0 bars (-119 dbm). Because of the bar modification in 4.01, you would start with 3 bars (-95 dbm) and fall to 1 bar (-119 dbm), but that 1 bar would still result in near zero service. There will *never* be a software fix for this problem.
The only thing the bumpers and cases do is provide 1 to 3 millimeters for the signal to leak out around your hand so that you still get some signal.
Therefore the only recommendation I have is to get a bumper/case or "just avoid holding it in this way." (Steve Jobs)
